Johannesburg Market Research

From Melrose Arch we can reach a JSE-listed insights team in Sandton, a Rosebank agency, a Maboneng streetwear founder and a Diepkloof household inside one working day, and that radius is the point of Johannesburg market research: no other South African metro packs corporate head offices, the country's biggest retail nodes and a township of more than a million people into a single commuting map. The city rewards fieldwork done in person, so we recruit at Maponya Mall and Mall of Africa in the same week, moderate in isiZulu, Sesotho and English, and debrief clients across the road from where the groups ran.

Why Research in Johannesburg Matters

  • South Africa's corporate decision-makers sit within a short arc of Sandton, which is why most national B2B and stakeholder studies are effectively won or lost in Johannesburg.
  • Soweto alone holds more consumers than most South African cities, and its retail mix of Maponya Mall, taxi-rank trade and spaza networks behaves differently from Alexandra or Tembisa.
  • The Gauteng consumer is the national default in most datasets, which makes Johannesburg the right place to build norms and the wrong place to stop if a brand trades nationally.
  • All nine official languages are working languages here; one Diepsloot group can move between isiZulu, Sepedi and English in a single discussion, and moderation has to follow without flattening it.
  • Distance and security shape field logistics, and recruiting in Alexandra while hosting in Sandton only works when respondent transport is planned and paid for, or no-shows follow.

Our Research Services in Johannesburg

Focus groups at Melrose Arch

Groups hosted minutes from Sandton and Rosebank with client viewing, recording and same-evening debriefs, recruited to spec on language, LSM, life stage and suburb from our own Gauteng respondent networks.

Township fieldwork across Gauteng

In-home interviews, intercepts and ethnographic visits in Soweto, Alexandra, Tembisa, Diepsloot and Katlehong, run by fieldworkers who live in these communities and audited from Melrose Arch.

B2B and executive interviews

Depth interviews with decision-makers in Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand and the CBD, recruited by senior researchers through direct outreach, because the concentration of head offices makes Johannesburg the deciding market for national B2B studies.

Retail and mall intercepts

Exit interviews and shop-alongs at Sandton City, Mall of Africa, Maponya Mall and Eastgate, with centre permissions, quota control and field supervision handled by our own staff.

Brand and advertising research

Qualitative and quantitative brand health, ad testing and positioning work, the core of our Johannesburg market research practice, benchmarked against norms built on Gauteng samples.

Multi-language quantitative fieldwork

CAPI and CATI surveys fielded in isiZulu, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi, Afrikaans and English, with translation, back-translation and piloting completed before a single production interview runs.

How We Run Research in Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the one metro where every stage happens within our own walls. Nothing here is subcontracted. Studies are designed, fielded, coded and reported from Melrose Arch; recruiters, moderators and field supervisors are our own people, and clients are welcome at every stage from screener sign-off to the debrief. Sampling is planned suburb by suburb, because Houghton, Cosmo City and Orange Farm are different economies. QC includes GPS-logged interviews, audio spot-checks in the original language, and independent back-checks on every fieldworker's completes.

Why Choose Meraki Research in Johannesburg?

  • Johannesburg is our home market, so a field problem on a Tuesday morning is in front of the project lead by lunchtime and solved that afternoon.
  • Native-speaker moderators run groups in isiZulu, Sesotho, Setswana and Sepedi, matched to the recruit before field starts.
  • Respondent networks run from Sandton professionals to Soweto and Alexandra households, built through repeat fieldwork instead of bought lists.
  • Clients can observe groups live, join a same-evening debrief, or have us present at their offices anywhere in the metro within days of field closing.

Frequently asked questions

At Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, which is our only office. Design, moderation, coding, analysis and reporting all happen here, and metro fieldwork is run by our own recruiters and supervisors. Brief us on a Monday and you can usually meet the researcher who will moderate your groups before the week is out.

Yes, and for some briefs they should. Community venues in Soweto or Alexandra produce more natural discussion for local-brand and category work, while central venues suit mixed-suburb recruits and client viewing. We advise per brief, arrange respondent transport either way, and record to the same standard in both settings.

We quote per study rather than off a rate card, and because this is our home market there is no travel or subcontracting overlay in a Johannesburg quote. The drivers are sample size, languages, incidence and method, so a low-incidence executive recruit carries more cost than a general-population sample, and the proposal shows that reasoning line by line.

Group recruitment from our own Gauteng networks typically takes one to two weeks, and an online or CATI study can start within days of questionnaire sign-off. Metro-wide in-person CAPI takes longer to roster and brief. What we will not do is compress recruitment until quotas quietly slip, because that is where field quality goes first.

When the brief needs it, yes. Benoni, Boksburg, Katlehong and Krugersdorp fall inside our standard Gauteng frames alongside Tshwane, and quotas state explicitly which municipalities the results represent. East Rand shoppers are not interchangeable with Soweto or Randburg samples, and we fix the frame at proposal stage so results are read against the right population.
