You have invested in a digital product — a website, an app, a platform — and you need to know whether real users can actually accomplish what you designed it to do. Not whether they say they like it. Whether they can use it. Usability testing tools and methods exist to answer that question, but the tools alone do not generate insight. What matters is how the research is designed, who the participants are, and how the findings translate into concrete design improvements.
At Meraki Research, we conduct usability testing as a strategic research discipline, not a checkbox exercise. We combine proven research methods with the right technology to reveal where your designs succeed, where they fail, and what to fix first.
Our Approach: The Meraki Experience Validation Framework
Usability testing at Meraki follows a structured process that adapts to your product's maturity, your timeline, and the users who matter most to your business. Whether we are evaluating early prototypes or auditing a live platform, the framework stays consistent.
Phase 1: Objectives and Task Architecture
We begin by defining what success looks like. This means identifying the key task flows and interaction points that drive business value — not testing everything, but testing what matters. We work with your product and design teams to map the critical user journeys and establish clear performance benchmarks.
For each priority area, we develop task scenarios that mirror real-world usage. These are not artificial prompts; they reflect actual goals your users bring to your product. A well-constructed task scenario is the difference between surface-level feedback and insight that changes roadmaps.
Phase 2: Participant Recruitment and Study Design
Usability findings are only as valid as the people in the studies. We recruit participants who match your actual user base — by role, technical proficiency, domain expertise, and usage patterns. If your platform serves multiple audience segments, we structure the study to capture differences across those groups.
We also determine the study format at this stage. Moderated sessions give us the ability to probe deeper when users encounter friction. Unmoderated sessions, powered by usability testing tools like Maze, Optimal Workshop, and Userpeek, let us scale quickly and capture behaviour across larger samples. Many of our studies use a hybrid approach.
Phase 3: Test Execution and Behavioral Observation
During testing, we capture everything that matters: task completion rates, time on task, error frequency, navigation paths, and the verbal and behavioral cues that explain the "why" behind the numbers. Our researchers watch for hesitation, backtracking, misinterpretation of labels, and the moments where users abandon a task entirely.
For prototypes and wireframes, we use interactive testing environments that simulate the real experience without requiring finished code. For live websites and applications, we test on production environments to capture authentic performance conditions. We leverage tools like Maze for unmoderated prototype testing, Optimal Workshop for card sorting and information architecture validation, and Userpeek for video-based remote sessions — selecting the right tool for each study rather than forcing everything through a single platform.
Phase 4: Analysis and Design Recommendations
We translate raw usability data into a prioritized plan of action. Every issue is classified by severity (critical, major, minor) and mapped to specific screens, flows, or features. We do not just flag problems — we explain why they occur and recommend specific design solutions grounded in established usability principles.
Our analysis considers the full context: how issues interact with each other, how they affect different user segments, and which fixes will deliver the greatest improvement in ease of use and task success.
When Usability Testing Is the Right Fit
Usability testing applies across the product lifecycle, but certain moments make it especially valuable:
- Before development begins. Testing prototypes and wireframes catches structural problems when changes are cheap. Validating information architecture through card sorting and tree testing prevents costly redesigns.
- During iterative design sprints. Quick-turn usability studies keep development teams aligned with real user behaviour instead of assumptions.
- Before a major launch or redesign. A pre-launch usability audit identifies the friction points that will drive support tickets, abandonment, and negative reviews.
- After launch, when metrics signal trouble. When bounce rates spike, conversion drops, or support volume increases, usability testing pinpoints the cause.
When Usability Testing May Not Be What You Need
If you are trying to determine whether a product idea resonates with your market — before any design work has started — Concept Testing or Concept Screening is a better starting point. If you need to evaluate a physical product rather than a digital experience, Product Testing or Central Location Testing (CLT) will serve you better.
What We Deliver
Every usability testing engagement produces actionable deliverables designed for product, design, and engineering teams:
- Usability scorecard with task-level metrics: completion rate, time on task, error rate, and satisfaction scores
- Issue inventory with severity ratings, affected screens, and recommended fixes
- User journey maps showing actual navigation paths versus intended flows
- Highlight reel of key session moments — the clips that make stakeholders understand the problem viscerally
- Prioritized action plan organised by impact and implementation ease
- Benchmark data for tracking improvement across iterative test rounds
- Executive summary for leadership audiences who need the story without the detail
All deliverables are provided in digital format. We present findings in a collaborative debrief session where your design and product teams can ask questions and begin planning next steps immediately.
Industry Applications
Financial Services
Banking apps, insurance portals, and investment platforms demand high usability because errors have real financial consequences. We test account management flows, application processes, and self-service features to ensure users can complete critical tasks without confusion or abandonment.
Healthcare and Life Sciences
Patient portals, EHR interfaces, telehealth platforms, and clinical tools all serve users under stress or time pressure. Our usability testing for healthcare products considers accessibility, health literacy, and regulatory requirements alongside standard usability metrics.
E-Commerce and Retail
Every friction point in a purchase flow costs revenue. We test product discovery, filtering, cart management, checkout, and account features to identify the specific moments where shoppers drop off and what design changes will recover those conversions.
SaaS and Enterprise Software
Complex platforms with deep feature sets often suffer from discoverability and learnability problems. We design usability studies that evaluate onboarding flows, core workflows, and advanced features to ensure the product delivers value to both new and experienced users.
Media and Publishing
Content platforms, streaming services, and digital publications compete on experience as much as content. We test navigation, content discovery, personalization features, and cross-device consistency to ensure users find what they want and stay engaged.
Education Technology
Learning platforms serve diverse audiences — students, instructors, administrators — each with different goals and technical comfort levels. Our usability testing evaluates the experience for each role, ensuring the platform supports learning outcomes rather than creating barriers.
