Every year, companies commit millions of dollars to ad campaigns before anyone outside the marketing teams has seen the work. The creative feels right. The strategy deck is polished. But feelings and decks do not predict how real consumers will respond when your campaign goes live. Pre-campaign testing research is the discipline of answering that question before you spend -- not after.

At Meraki Research, we help brands validate, refine, and optimise their creative and messaging before campaign launch. Our pre-testing work has saved clients from expensive misfires and, just as importantly, has given confident green lights to campaigns that deserved full investment. Whether you are finalizing a national television buy or preparing a digital-first launch, we provide the evidence your marketing teams need to commit budget with conviction.

Our Approach: The Pre-Launch Validation Methodology

Our Pre-Launch Validation Methodology is designed for the reality of modern campaign development: compressed timelines, multiple creative variants, and stakeholders who need clear answers fast. We built it around one principle -- pre-testing should accelerate good decisions, not slow them down.

Phase 1: Objective Alignment & Design We start by clarifying what your campaign needs to accomplish. Awareness? Consideration? Behavior change? Each objective demands different measurement. We also identify the audiences, markets, and competitive context that matter most. For a recent engagement with a mid-size athletic footwear brand -- comparable in ambition to New Balance when they expanded into lifestyle positioning -- this phase revealed that the campaign needed to reach two very different audiences with distinct motivations, requiring separate creative evaluation streams.

Phase 2: Stimulus Preparation & Exposure Design We work with your team to prepare test materials at the appropriate fidelity. Storyboards, animatics, rough cuts, scripts, static ads, and digital mockups can all be tested effectively. The key is matching stimulus quality to the research objective. Early-stage concept screening requires different materials than finished-execution evaluation. We design exposure conditions that simulate real-world consumer attention patterns rather than forcing artificial viewing.

Phase 3: Audience Response Measurement This is the core of pre-testing. We measure how your target audience responds across multiple dimensions: attention capture, message comprehension, emotional resonance, brand linkage, persuasion, and intended behaviour. Our testing methods combine quantitative survey measurement with qualitative exploration and implicit response techniques. We capture not just what consumers say about your ads but how they actually process and react to them -- because consumer attention is fleeting and first reactions matter.

Phase 4: Creative Optimization When we identify weaknesses, we do not just flag them. We diagnose the underlying cause and recommend specific fixes. Is the opening failing to capture attention in the first three seconds? Is the brand reveal too late? Does the call to action feel disconnected from the emotional arc? Our optimisation guidance is granular enough for your creative team to act on immediately. This is where pre-testing delivers its greatest value -- enabling creative optimisation while changes are still inexpensive to make.

Phase 5: Go/No-Go Recommendation We provide a clear, evidence-based recommendation: launch as-is, launch with modifications, or go back to development. This recommendation is benchmarked against category norms and your own historical performance. No ambiguity, no hedge.

When Pre-Campaign Research Applies

This research is the right fit when:

  • You are about to commit significant media budget to a new campaign and want confidence that the creative will perform
  • You have multiple creative directions and need an objective basis for choosing the strongest execution
  • Marketing teams and leadership disagree about which campaign direction to pursue, and you need data to break the tie
  • You are entering a new market, category, or audience segment and have limited prior campaign performance data
  • You want to optimise creative elements -- messaging, visuals, tone, pacing -- before locking final production
  • You are investing in innovation with untested formats, channels, or storytelling approaches

This research is NOT the right fit when:

  • Your campaign is already live and fully committed -- our post-campaign analysis is better suited for in-market or post-flight evaluation
  • You are looking for ongoing brand measurement unrelated to a specific campaign -- see our Brand Tracking services
  • Your creative is in the earliest ideation phase with no tangible stimulus to test -- strategic brand research through Brand Health Research can help shape the brief

What We Deliver

Every pre-testing engagement produces deliverables built for speed and clarity.

  • Creative Scorecard: Each creative execution rated across attention, comprehension, emotional response, brand linkage, and persuasion -- benchmarked against category norms
  • Head-to-Head Comparison: When multiple executions are tested, a clear rank-order with diagnostic detail on why one outperforms another
  • Attention Analysis: Where consumer attention peaks and drops across your ads, identifying the moments that work and the moments that lose the audience
  • Message Takeaway Report: What your audience actually takes away from your campaign versus what you intended them to understand
  • Optimization Brief: A specific, actionable guide for your creative team detailing recommended changes with the projected impact of each
  • Executive Decision Document: A concise go/no-go recommendation with supporting evidence, formatted for leadership presentations

All deliverables are available in interactive dashboard, PDF, and PowerPoint formats. Turnaround for standard pre-testing projects is two to four weeks from fieldwork launch.

Industry Applications

Consumer Packaged Goods CPG brands live and die on campaign effectiveness. With hundreds of millions of impressions at stake in a national launch, pre-testing is not optional -- it is insurance. We help CPG companies evaluate everything from thirty-second spots to social-first content, ensuring the creative resonates at shelf and beyond.

Retail & E-Commerce Retail campaigns must drive immediate action while building brand equity. Our pre-testing identifies whether your ads create urgency without sacrificing long-term brand perception -- a balance many retail brands struggle to achieve.

Financial Services Financial ads face higher skepticism. Pre-testing in this category focuses on credibility, trustworthiness, and clarity of the value proposition. We measure whether consumers believe what you are promising, not just whether they like the ad campaigns.

Technology & Software Tech campaigns frequently over-index on features and under-index on human benefit. Our testing methods reveal whether your audience grasps the value your product delivers, particularly for complex or abstract offerings.

Healthcare & Pharma DTC pharmaceutical and health campaigns must be tested against both effectiveness and compliance standards. We design pre-testing research that captures persuasion and comprehension within the constraints of regulated advertising.

Automotive With production budgets often exceeding a million dollars for a single spot, automotive brands cannot afford to guess. Our pre-testing validates emotional storytelling, feature communication, and brand differentiation before the cameras roll.

Frequently asked questions

We can test at virtually any stage -- from written concepts and mood boards through rough cuts and finished executions. Earlier testing provides more room for creative optimisation and is significantly less expensive than testing finished work. Many of the brands we work with build pre-testing into their creative development process as a standard phase, not an afterthought.

We typically recommend testing three to five creative directions for meaningful comparison. Fewer than three limits your ability to identify a winner with statistical confidence. More than five can dilute the research focus. That said, we have run studies evaluating dozens of ads when companies needed to screen a large pool of digital variants.

Focus groups are one qualitative tool within a much larger pre-testing toolkit. Our methodology combines quantitative measurement (sample sizes large enough for statistical significance), qualitative exploration (for depth and nuance), and implicit response techniques (for capturing reactions consumers cannot or will not articulate). Focus groups alone cannot tell you whether a campaign will work at scale. Our approach can.

No pre-testing method guarantees in-market results -- media weight, competitive activity, and market conditions all play a role. However, rigorous pre-testing dramatically improves your odds of effectiveness by catching weaknesses, validating strengths, and enabling creative optimisation before launch. Our Brand Tracker Programs and Brand Health Measurement can then track actual in-market impact.

Digital and social ads present unique pre-testing challenges: shorter formats, scroll-past behaviour, and platform-specific dynamics. We design test environments that simulate the feed experience so consumer attention patterns reflect reality, not a forced-viewing lab setting. This is especially critical given the millions of impressions digital campaigns generate.
