When you need more than a ranking, when you need to understand exactly why a concept wins or loses, monadic testing is the gold standard. Evaluating each stimulus in isolation means every reaction is pure, uncontaminated by comparisons to other ideas your research participants have just seen.
Too many organizations rely on side-by-side comparison testing and end up with a winner but no understanding of what made it win. Or worse, they pick the least-objectionable option rather than the most compelling one. At Meraki Research, we design monadic studies that give you rich, diagnostic data on each concept individually, so you know not just which idea leads, but precisely how to make it stronger.
Our team has run monadic test designs across every major consumer and B2B category. We know the methodological pitfalls, from order effects to stimulus fatigue, and we build safeguards directly into our survey research designs.
Our Approach: The Meraki Monadic Precision Method
A monadic design sounds simple: show one concept, measure reactions. In practice, it requires careful engineering to produce data that holds up under scrutiny.
Phase 1: Stimulus Preparation & Equalization
Before fielding, we ensure every stimulus is presented at an equivalent level of finish. If one concept is a polished rendering and another is a rough sketch, respondents react to execution quality rather than the idea itself. We work with your team to equalize stimuli so the playing field is fair.
We also determine the optimal level of information to include. For early-stage concepts, a brief written description may suffice. For more developed products, we may incorporate visuals, pricing, or simulated shelf sets.
Phase 2: Sample Architecture & Cell Design
In a pure monadic design, each survey respondent sees only one concept. This means sample sizes scale with the number of ideas you are evaluating. We design cell structures that balance statistical power against budget realities.
For studies where a pure monadic approach is not feasible, we can deploy sequential monadic designs where research participants evaluate two or three concepts in a randomized order, with a block structure that controls for order bias. We will advise on the tradeoff so you can make an informed decision.
Phase 3: Diagnostic Measurement Battery
Our measurement goes well beyond simple like/dislike. Each concept is evaluated on:
- Purchase intent and likelihood to try
- Uniqueness relative to what is already available
- Relevance to the respondent's needs or problems
- Value perception and price sensitivity
- Benefit clarity and ease of understanding
- Emotional response captured through both scaled and open-ended items
Because each concept is rated in isolation, these scores are directly comparable to our normative benchmarks, something a comparison test cannot provide.
Phase 4: Analysis & Concept Optimization
We analyse each concept on its own merits before comparing across your portfolio. This approach surfaces the absolute strength of every idea, not just relative preference. Our deliverables include a clear diagnostic profile for each concept with specific, actionable recommendations for strengthening positioning, messaging, and product features.
We also run key driver analysis to identify which benefits and attributes have the greatest impact on overall appeal, so your development team knows exactly where to focus.
When Monadic Testing Is the Right Call
This service fits when you need to:
- Understand the absolute appeal of each concept, not just which one beats the others
- Get deep diagnostic feedback to optimise concepts that show promise
- Benchmark ideas against category norms or historical scores, which requires the clean measurement that isolation-based evaluation provides
- Evaluate concepts at an early stage where detailed, unbiased feedback matters more than speed
- Understand how different methods of positioning or framing the same core idea affect response
This service is NOT the right fit when:
- You have 10+ concepts and need to narrow the field quickly. Concept screening is more efficient for large-scale winnowing.
- You need to evaluate a finished product in use. Product testing or IHUT is the better path.
- Budget or timelines require a single sample evaluating all ideas. In that case, a sequential monadic or screening design may be more practical.
What We Deliver
Monadic testing engagements produce deliverables designed for both executive decision-making and hands-on product development teams.
- Concept Scorecards: Individual diagnostic profiles for each concept with benchmarked scores across all key metrics
- Normative Comparison: How each idea stacks up against our database of tested concepts in your category
- Key Driver Analysis: Statistical identification of the attributes and benefits that most influence overall appeal
- Segment Breakouts: How different audience groups react, revealing whether a concept has broad appeal or niche strength
- Optimization Briefs: Specific, prioritized recommendations for improving each concept based on diagnostic feedback from research participants
- Verbatim Analysis: Coded and themed open-ended responses that explain the "why" behind the numbers
- Raw Data: Cleaned, tabulated data files for your internal analytics team
All reports are delivered in PowerPoint and PDF, with an interactive dashboard option available.
Industry Applications
Consumer Packaged Goods
Test individual product concepts with the diagnostic depth needed to refine formulation, positioning, and claims before committing to production. Monadic designs are particularly valuable in CPG because they allow direct benchmarking against category norms.
Healthcare & Medical Devices
Evaluate patient or provider response to treatment concepts, device propositions, or care delivery models. The isolation-based approach prevents anchoring bias, which is critical when evaluating sensitive health-related stimuli.
Financial Services
Assess new banking products, insurance packages, or investment offerings. Monadic evaluation is ideal for financial concepts where each product is complex enough to require focused attention from survey respondents without the distraction of alternatives.
Technology & Software
Validate feature concepts, pricing models, or new product categories. Tech concepts often require explanation, and the monadic format gives respondents the time and focus to absorb each idea fully before reacting.
Food & Beverage
Test flavor concepts, brand extensions, or new category entries. When taste is involved, monadic designs prevent the palate fatigue and contrast effects that plague comparison testing in food research.
Automotive
Evaluate vehicle feature packages, trim level concepts, or new mobility services. High-consideration purchases benefit from the deeper engagement that monadic methods provide.
