You have a product ready for real consumer feedback, but online surveys only tell you so much. You need to see how people actually interact with your product — watch their reactions, read their body language, and capture unfiltered impressions in real time. Central location testing gives you that direct, in-person window into consumer response, conducted in a controlled environment where every variable is managed and every interaction is observed.
At Meraki Research, we design and execute CLT programs that go far beyond simple taste tests or show-and-tell sessions. We build structured location testing studies that deliver the kind of nuanced feedback you need to make confident product decisions — whether you are finalizing a formula, evaluating packaging alternatives, or benchmarking against the competition.
Our Approach: The Meraki Controlled-Experience Method
We treat every central location test as a precision research operation. Our methodology balances scientific rigor with the practical realities of recruiting participants, managing physical products, and capturing data that actually drives decisions.
Phase 1: Study Architecture and Location Strategy
Before a single participant walks through the door, we define the research design in detail. This means establishing the test objectives, identifying the right types of product comparisons (monadic, sequential monadic, paired comparison), and selecting the optimal location for fieldwork.
Not every product belongs in a shopping mall intercept. We match the testing environment to the product category and the target audience. For some studies, a dedicated research facility provides the control we need. For others, a high-traffic retail location puts us closer to the natural purchase context. We evaluate foot traffic patterns, demographic alignment, and logistical feasibility before making a recommendation.
Phase 2: Participant Recruitment and Screening
The quality of your CLT data depends entirely on the quality of your participants. We develop screening criteria that reflect your actual target consumer — not just broad demographic quotas, but behavioral and attitudinal qualifiers that ensure every person in the study is genuinely relevant to your business.
Our researchers manage recruitment through a combination of pre-recruited panels and on-site intercept approaches, depending on the study design. We build in over-recruits to protect against no-shows and maintain sample integrity throughout the fieldwork window.
Phase 3: Controlled Product Exposure and Data Collection
This is where CLT earns its value. In a controlled environment, we present products under standardized conditions — consistent lighting, temperature, preparation methods, and serving protocols. Every participant encounters the product in the same way, which means the differences in their reactions reflect genuine preference rather than situational noise.
Our field teams capture both structured and unstructured data. We collect quantitative ratings through carefully sequenced questions designed to minimize order bias. At the same time, trained researchers observe body language, spontaneous comments, and behavioral cues that surveys simply cannot capture. This combination of stated and observed response gives you a complete picture of how consumers actually experience your product.
Phase 4: Analysis and Actionable Reporting
We analyse CLT data with a focus on decision-readiness. That means going beyond top-line preference scores to identify the specific sensory, functional, or aesthetic drivers behind consumer feedback. We look for patterns across segments, flag areas of concern, and provide clear recommendations tied to your product development timeline.
When Central Location Testing Is the Right Fit
CLT is the strongest choice when your research requires controlled product exposure and in-person observation. It works best when:
- The product must be experienced physically. Food and beverage, fragrance, personal care, and tactile consumer goods all benefit from CLT because taste, smell, and touch cannot be replicated digitally.
- You need to control the testing environment. When product temperature, preparation method, lighting, or presentation sequence matters, a controlled location eliminates variability.
- You want to observe real-time reactions. Watching participants interact with your product — their hesitation, surprise, delight, or confusion — adds a layer of insight that self-reported data misses.
- You are comparing multiple product variants. CLT excels at head-to-head product tests because every variant is presented under identical conditions.
When CLT May Not Be the Best Approach
Central location testing is not ideal when you need to understand how a product performs in the consumer's own home over multiple uses. For extended-use evaluation, In-Home Use Testing (IHUT) is a better fit. If your product is still at the concept stage — before a physical prototype exists — consider Concept Testing or Concept Screening to validate the idea before investing in production.
What We Deliver
Every CLT engagement produces a deliverable package tailored to your decision-making process:
- Executive summary with headline findings and go/no-go recommendations
- Quantitative scorecards covering overall preference, attribute ratings, purchase intent, and diagnostic metrics
- Observational insights report documenting body language, spontaneous reactions, and behavioral patterns noted by our field researchers
- Segment-level analysis breaking results down by demographics, usage behaviour, or other relevant audience cuts
- Product comparison matrices for multi-variant studies, with statistical significance testing
- Raw data files in your preferred format (SPSS, Excel, CSV) for internal analysis
- Presentation deck designed for stakeholder review, with visual summaries and strategic context
We present findings in a live debrief session and provide all materials in digital format for easy distribution across your team.
Industry Applications
Food and Beverage
CLT is the gold standard for sensory evaluation in food and beverage. We manage product preparation, serving protocols, and palate cleansing procedures to ensure clean, reliable taste-test data. Whether you are optimising a recipe, testing a new flavor extension, or benchmarking against a competitor, controlled location testing removes the variables that compromise at-home testing.
Consumer Packaged Goods
For CPG brands, packaging is product experience. We design CLT studies that evaluate shelf appeal, ease of opening, label comprehension, and overall impressions — all in an environment that simulates real purchase and use conditions.
Personal Care and Beauty
Texture, scent, application feel, and visual results all demand in-person evaluation. Our CLT programs for personal care brands capture immediate sensory response alongside longer-form attribute ratings, giving R&D teams the data they need to refine formulations.
Household Products
From cleaning products to home fragrance, household goods often require demonstration or trial to evaluate effectively. CLT allows participants to handle, test, and compare products in a setting where our researchers can observe ease of use and capture genuine feedback.
Retail and Packaging Design
When you need to understand how consumers respond to new packaging formats, label designs, or merchandising concepts, CLT provides a controlled stage for evaluation. We can simulate shelf sets, test planogram placements, and measure visual attention alongside stated preference.
Automotive and Durable Goods
For high-consideration products, CLT allows consumers to interact with physical prototypes, models, or material samples in a structured setting. We capture tactile response, perceived quality assessments, and feature-level feedback that informs design and engineering decisions.
